The correct format for an email address
A top-level domain (TLD) is the suffix or extension tied to a website, and it is the last segment of a domain name that follows the final dot. For example, in the domain name www.example.com, the TLD is .com.
Here are some examples of TLDs and their primary uses:
- .net: Originally intended for network services; now used as an alternative to .com for various types of websites.2
- .gov: U.S. government entities. Restricted to governmental bodies.2
- .mil: U.S. military organizations. Restricted to military use.2
- .info: Informational sites, guides, and resource centers. Easy to remember and straightforward.2
- .biz: Businesses, particularly small to medium enterprises. Focused on commerce.2
- .app: Websites related to mobile and web applications. Often used by developers and tech companies.2
- .tech: Technology-related websites, startups, and companies. Used to signal a focus on technology.2
- .site: Versatile and suitable for various types of websites. Alternative to .com and .net.2
- .co: Companies, startups, and businesses. Alternative to .com with a modern touch.
A "domain" name is a unique, easy-to-remember address used to access websites, similar to how you use a street address to find a building. It translates a website's numerical IP address into a human-readable format, making it easier for users to remember and search for websites.
An email username is the part of an email address before the @ symbol. It is used to identify a user's mailbox within a domain uniquely.
For example, in the email address john.smith@example.com, "john.smith" is the username.
The valid format for an email address is as follows:
username@domain.tld
If you're utilizing a subdomain, use the following format:
username@subdomain.domain.tld
It's not uncommon to see country abbreviations like UK or JP at the end of an email address, as follows:
username@domain.tld.uk
